WaterSchool. A speculation in four seasons

As the site of the peace treaty of 1763, Hubertusburg Castle will once again be the setting for negotiations on the future peaceful utilisation of resources. In view of the centuries-long struggle for resources and the associated power structures, a reconsideration of consumption, ownership and accessibility is urgently needed.

WasserSchule. Eine Spekulation in vier Jahreszeiten | Wermsdorf, Schloss Hubertusburg 26.5.—13.10.24

Die jahrhundertelange und wechselvolle

Studio Makkink & Bey has been working internationally on so-called ‘WaterSchools’ since 2012. With this exhibition and an accompanying DESIGN CAMPUS summer school, the first of its kind in Germany and for the first time in the rural area of Wermsdorf is now being developed. At Schloss Hubertusburg, the urban and international background of the studio interacts with the long and eventful history of Schloss Hubertusburg, which has served as a hunting lodge, sanatorium, military magazine and factory, to create new perspectives. The exhibition discusses the use of resources, focussing on inclusion, sustainability and a new concept of luxury.

‘WaterSchool Hubertusburg. A speculation in four seasons’

The WaterSchool sees Hubertusburg Castle as a place of learning that creates links to the surrounding agriculture, forestry and pond farming as well as other local production. The exhibition organises the possible future of Hubertusburg and its surroundings into four seasons, each of which is dedicated to different economic forms. This allows a speculative landscape of life and work on a small scale.

Die Ausstellung wird

The exhibition is accompanied by the future-orientated DESIGN CAMPUS Summer School, which deals with current design issues and strengthens the social impact of design. Studio Makkink & Bey has developed a multi-week programme for this year's summer school, which will use workshops and events to explore the potential for improving a more sustainable and water-friendly quality of life in rural areas.

Die WasserSchule ist

The WaterSchool is more than an exhibition; it is a call to action. It challenges us to rethink our relationship with water and other resources and to find new ways to use and protect them sustainably. In the exhibition, workshops and events with local and international actors, Hubertusburg Castle invites everyone to think together about the future and take concrete steps towards a more sustainable world.
