Trading places. Designers meet the collection

Storage facilities are fascinating places often not accessible to the public. In their structure they follow the spatial and conservatory necessities. The seemingly inevitability and concentration have a special charm. Depots are the hidden stock of knowledge for the museum. Here, objects are stored that cannot permanently be displayed for reasons of space or conservation. However, these objects are not only carefully inventoried and stored, but are constantly scientifically evaluated.

The Kunstgewerbemuseum invited five design studios to deal with its collection: Daphna Laurens (NL), mischer’traxler (A), Loris & Livia (CH), Judith Seng (D) and Dechem (CZ). They received the commission to choose one object or object group and to design an installation. Herewith the Kunstgewerbemuseum opens its collection for a contemporary interpretation and takes the founding idea into account to be a place of dialogue between artists, creators and public.

Designers spent many hours, even days in the depot and were able to get comprehensive insights into the collection. In return, the museum was also able to benefit from their views onto the collection. The design studios’ object selection was enriching and at the same time surprising.

One aim of the exhibition is to open up the collection and to develop new forms of presentation. Changing the position and angle of view will point the way to new approaches and inspirations.

Daphna
Daphna Laurens from Eindhoven fell in love with a plain object form the metal collection. They enlarged it and mirrored its uniqueness in absurd, non-functional objects.

Mischer’traxler
Mischer’traxler from Vienna found their starting point in “eternal shadows” of past presentations. They re-interpreted them with the means of electrolysis reminding us of the historic technology of galvanism.

Loris & Livia
Who takes a look at the back of historic textiles that appear very modern and that are displayed by Loris & Livia in all their colorfulness?

Judith Seng
Judith Seng from Berlin will create a colossal bobbin lace in a modern “Bandltanz” (ribbon dance).

Dechem
Dechem Studio from Prague leads with a perfume that was specifically designed into the depots of Schloss Pillnitz.
