Textile Design

From experiment to production line

What is textile? Textile covers our bodies and is found in our home furniture. High-tech textiles are used in sports, medicine or vehicles. Textile design deals with colour, material and structure, and seeks answers for function, sustainability and technological development.  In doing so, textile design deals with aesthetic, technical and economic issues. What are the requirements for textiles and how can they be practically and experimentally solved?

The central focus of the exhibition “Textile design. From experiment to production line” is about working with textiles and what their many uses are. Using work created by students of the textiles course at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle and examples from industrial production, the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts) gives an overview of the composition and use of textile products.

The panorama of objects exhibited stretches from innovative and sustainably produced fabrics made from recycled plastics and natural raw materials to 3D-printed clothing and function-orientated smart textiles. Artistic and experimental analyses of traditions, other cultures and techniques form the basis of the methodological approach that leads to solutions which can be seen in the exhibition.
